Ever since the first arrival of MP3 there has been an argument as to whether the original CD or vinyl albums were better than the new format on the block. The arguments included those over sound-quality, cover art and of course, legality.

Of course everyone accepts that MP3 is here to stay and sales show that the format is eclipsing the traditional hard-copy product formats.

Putting the legal matters and record company profit-margins aside for a change it is interesting to really discuss the pros and cons of MP3 for the consumer. Of course there is something great about being able to put your music all onto one device - for both storage and portability. That said, there are those of you who would fill even the largest capacity MP3 players several times over before really denting your record collections. So, while they are certainly a good way to carry large quantities of music around, MP3 designers' bragging that they will fit all of your music on them doesn't always cut it.

The absence of cover art was a problem in the past as liner notes, shout-outs and pictures were seen as an integral part of the music you bought. These things still hold dear in the minds of many, even those who may have primarily switched to the MP3 format. Of course there are those who simply do not care for these things and the fact that you can import cover art and song lyrics seems to please most regular consumers. Besides, how often do you sit and read a CD booklet? Maybe once, when you first buy an album. But this sort of thing is very personal to the collector and there are those who simply have to have the gatefold vinyl sleeve...

The method of selling music has changed too as consumers can pick and choose which tracks they want rather than have to buy an entire album just for the one or two tracks they wanted. This is, of course, a good thing and something that the old formats simply could not offer.
